At the IGCSE level, currently KISU offers the Cambridge board Co-ordinated Sciences (Double Award). In this course, students gain a solid foundation in all three sciences: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These subjects are integrated within the course to provide a cross-curricular study of Science.
The syllabus provides topics through which students can discuss issues that arise from the interaction of science, technology, and society. These serve to remind students that matters of science are also matters of the everyday world. Correlation between what is taught in the classroom and issues of worldwide significance is a continual theme of the syllabus.
This is a two year course of study with students entering in Year 10 and writing their board examinations in May/June of Year 11.
Students are assessed by writing three different papers, each with a different weighting to their overall IGCSE Science mark. Currently students are not assessed on their coursework, instead a Paper 6: Alternative to Practical Paper is written.
Paper 1 is a 45 minute multiple choice paper consisting of forty multiple choice questions. This paper is weighted at 30% of the final total marks available.
Paper 3 is a two hour extended theory paper consisting of 100 marks of short-answer and structured questions. This paper is weighted at 50% of the final total available marks. This paper is on the extended curriculum allowing for attainment of grades A* to G.
Paper 6 is a one hour Alternative to Practical Paper designed to test familiarity with laboratory based procedures. This paper is weighted at 20% of the final total available marks.
